Sour Cream Pear Raisin Pie

October 28, 2008

If you are not a big fan of raisins, may I suggest GOLDEN raisins?   I prefer the golden raisins, myself.   If you seriously do not like raisins, just skip this recipe.   It amazed me how much flavor the raisins give this pie.    I am not a big fan of sour cream pies – because of the raisins! – but I was hoping the pears would give it a new texture and flavor balance.  It did, this is wonderful.   Not my favorite pear pie of all time, but I’ll make it again.

I found this at  Recipe Goldmine (dot com) and printed it in 2004.   I did not attempt this recipe until last week.   (oh yes! My pie book is packed with pie recipes I’ve yet to try. Which inspires me to consider a ‘Resurrected Recipe’ feature to this blog. Whadda ya think?)

5 Fresh Pears – Anjou*  – diced, skins on or off
1/2 cup raisins
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3/4 cup packed lt brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup sour cream
1 unbaked pie shell

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Reserve half a pear for the garnish on top.  Core and dice remaining pears (I didn’t peel the pears.)  Combine pears and raisins, sprinkle with lemon juice.  Blend brown sugar, eggs and sour cream.  Combine pear mixture and turn into unbaked pastry shell.   Garnish with reserved pear slices.  Brush pear slices with melted butter.  Bake 1 hour or until knife inserted near center comes out clean.

*  I pick the biggest pears I can find and they need to be not-quite ripe, thus firm and crisp.    The japanese pears are often great choices for pear pie, too.   Again, I used golden raisins and would even try using 1/3 cup of them next time.   or NONE AT ALL.

The quantity was too much for one pie!  Luckily, I had more pie pastry and a smaller pie pan to use.    I was also amazed how golden yellow these turned out.   Top with LOTS of whip cream!

Monday Musings

July 7, 2008

I want to establish some more disciplined blogging habits.   I hope to actually visit the “My Comments” section of the dashboard BEFORE I do anything else, then respond to comments here (thank you!) and then visit the bloggers blogs that have stopped by and then visit my must-visits faves, then other blogs in my roll at random (hey – wonder what THEY are up to these days…) and then post.

But I’m not disciplined.

I usually go bounce around and leave a few comments and when I do go visit My Comments, it’s always the comments I just left 2 minutes ago.

Then I remember my google-reader and get overwhelmed how many blogs I’ve added to this service, how many posts the count is up to, and then I go do some laundry.

Did anyone watch Wimbledon?!    wow.   WOW.      I do admire the male tennis player physique…

While on vacation, no – while on the drive BACK from the holiday to the neighborhood, I was writing in my journal about all the fun things I am inspired to do!     I must be more disciplined to ACCOMPLISH and get the mosaics COMPLETE.  DONE.   I want to get back to scrapbooking.  First I must re-organize my craft room.    I want to sew.   I want to design or take apart a few dresses and recreate in other more fun fabrics!     I have curtains to hem and hang that have been patiently waiting for me for 14 months now.    I have a camera that I really should sit down with the book and understand what the thing is doing (at those times when I get the display chart and can’t get it to go back to ‘next photo ready’ aim.   I always turn it off and turn it back on.  sigh.)

And, now, I have so much to do today that is just life stuff.   laundry, groceries, my volunteering – I’ve got 4 appts today.  TODAY!

The latest CAIRN.  Before the 5 year old thought it was cool to knock it down…

I have company visiting later this week and I need to get ready.     Just so you know, I won’t be posting much on the ol’ blug during the next fortnight or so…

Happy July!Yours truly, Curious C

I Missed Pie Day

Horrors upon horrors!   I missed National Pie Day.     It was yesterday.

pieday.jpg   Yesterday, I did not make a pie.   I did not share a pie.  I did not know about the pieness of the day!

I vow to remember this holy day NEXT YEAR, God willing.

Now, I’m curious….   So what is TODAY?!    Well, according to the Brownie Locks website for January, today, Thursday, January 24th is

Belly Laugh Day

National Compliment Day

Women’s Healthy Weight in Blue Jeans Day

Tomorrow, will be National Seed Swap Day.   So to the first person who has some seeds to swap, I offer up some Zinnias!  100_4296.jpg

Teaser Alert!

December 21, 2007

I really want to post one of those ideas I had awhile back about BEER.

Remember, I told you about this fab pub I found on my latest travels?  I thought I had screwed up and took photos from my phone – which is NOT good due to my being a scrooge and NOT buying email service nor the device that allows me to connect phone to PC…

I realized that I had my other previous prior cellphone with the cool camera and I already own the device that shares data between phone and computer, so I am able to share.

But I have to do it later.

I have pie to make – pie TINS to buy, a goose to purchase, some port for the goose fixin’ recipe, gifts to drop off, books to deliver, maybe a stop at the library first, take the dog to daycare, print a few more Xmas cards – address & mail, etc.  First.   oh!  crap – it’s trash day…  gotta run

SO PLEASE DO COME BACK LATER!    It will be my next post and probably will be later today.

Happy Friday, “C”

Prepare Ya A Papaya Pie!

November 21, 2007

Happy Be Grateful Day!    Let’s Celebrate with More Pie…

100_4803.jpg   This one is my “Prepare Ya a Papaya Pie!” Pie!  Pretty, isn’t it?   Thanks to and Peggy Trowbridge Fillippone for the recipe…   I hope it tastes OK;  I detected a strange slight non-pleasant indescribable scent from the fruit but I was told ‘it’s fine’ by 2 people I was able to ask, “Does this smell funny to you?”

100_4804.jpg  This is my Grandmother’s recipe for Pumpkin Pie – the standard, really.  Except she has a secret ingredient which makes it truly divine…   (This will be my last pie post for awhile, I promise…)

Happy Thanksgiving Dear Readers!

May you have your favorite piece of pie

and still have room for more!!
